Summer is here and Magnuson Dog Park is busy. With the sun comes more people and thier four legged companions. I love seeing
all the people smiling and tails wagging. Most days are filled with fun, swimming, and playing but with more park patrons,
comes more risk. There are more chances for bad dog bevior, the most common is an unsocialized dog. Dogs can have many responses
to other dogs: Avoidance,Flight,Fight and friend are the most common behaviors. It is up to us to know our dogs body language
and change the situatio if it becomes negative.
Some of the rules I follow while walking the dogs during the summer,
is to keep the dogs moving. A dog in motion is less likely to get itself introuble. Having a high reward treat is a great
distraction from an uncomfortable situation. Most important remove your dog from the park if he is showing nervouse fear or
extreme excitment. Both can escalute into a fight or flight situation. If your dog is showing these behaviors the dog park
is not a place to work on them
The dogs in my group are a great bunch of dogs. Each of them have their own tempernants
and cranky triggers but all of them have impecable recall. Situations rarely escalate to aggression. For that I can thank
their humans in helping them live a balanced life. Allowing your dog to socialize is the greatest gift.
